The Hesse District was formed by the British government after it took over New France (Nouvelle-France) from the French in 1763. It included what is now western Ontario, Canada and, to start with, all the previously French-held territory down the Mississippi to Louisiana.

By the Treaty of Paris in 1783 Britain ceded all the territory south and west of the Great Lakes and the rivers that joined them. This reduced the size of the Hesse District to the area now covered by the counties of Essex and Kent. (Source: Wikipedia)

The name Canada was adopted in 1792 with what was to become Ontario named Upper Canada and what was to become Quebec named Lower Canada.
