Gloucester Barton St. Michael was a hamlet until 1866 and a civil parish from 1866 until 1885 when it was abolished and absorbed into the parishes of Gloucester Barton St. Mary and Wotton St. Mary Within. Prior to that it had ecclesiastical links with the parish of Gloucester St. Michael.
