"The higher, and central, part of the present parish of Kirkcudbright comprises the arable and muir lands of the medieval parish of Galtway (pronounced Gatta). Following the conscription of very many men by John McLellan, third Lord Kirkcudbright to fight Cromwell's campaign in Ireland, the parishes of Galtway and Dunrod were denuded of population and were united with that of Kirkcudbright about 1663.

"The approach to the ruins of the medieval church and its surrounding burial ground is through the farmstead of Banks and across two fields to the edge of a small wood. The burial ground is still in use and kept in excellent condition. The graves of the Earls of Selkirk are at the top of a gentle slope."
