From Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Memorial Inscriptions pre-1855, vol 3, by Alison Mitchell, (published 1993 by the Scottish Genealogy Society, Edinburgh, Scotland):

"There was a small church at this site, and a rural parish, from the 12th century until, with Galtway, it was united with the parish of Kirkcudbright in about 1663.
"The medieval church was dedicated to St Brioch. The foundations stand on an exposed hillock in a shallow valley, surrounded by the walled burial ground. Access is restricted as the valley is part of a military firing range (but the occupants of the farms near Townhead may be able to advise), and entails a half-mile walk over pasture from the gate beside the telephone exchange (marked on OS maps)."
