East Lexham is a village in the English county of Norfolk. It is 7.7 miles (12.4 km) north of the town of Swaffham, 30.1 miles (48.4 km) west northwest of Norwich and 106 miles (171 km) northeast of London.

Since 1935 it has formed part of the civil parish of Lexham, which in turn is part of the District of Breckland. Local government responsibilities are shared between the parish, district and county councils. Since the population of the village was actually under 100, for the 2011 UK census it was counted with that of the neighbouing civil parish of Sporle with Palgrave.

The village is notable for its Anglican parish church. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, it is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. (There is more on the church in Wikipedia.)

The village lies about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of the A1065 Mildenhall, Suffolk, England to Fakenham road. The nearest railway station is at King’s Lynn for the Fen Line which runs between King’s Lynn and Cambridge.

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
