Chester City District (usually called Chester City Borough) was a non-metropolitan local government district of Cheshire, England, with the status of a city and a borough.

It was formed in 1974 from the County Borough and City of Chester itself, which was the principal settlement, and a large rural area formerly known as Chester Rural District and Tarvin Rural District. The largest settlements outside Chester included Malpas and Tarvin.

In 2009 a second reorganization took place in which Chester became part of the unitary authority of Cheshire and Chester West. The unitary authority also included the districts of Vale Royal and Ellesmere Port and Neston.

Research Tips

  • Wikipedia includes a map of the district which labels all the wards and parishes which existed by the time the district was abolished in 2009. During the period 1974-2009 there were some mergers of very small parishes which had existed pre-1974. Some names for these new parishes and wards may not be immediately recognizable to those familiar with the earlier place-names. A list linked to the individual parish articles accompanies the map.
  • During the time of the City of Chester District the local registration district (in charge of recording births, marriages and deaths and supervising censuses) had three different names: Chester (1974-1998), Cheshire West (1998-2007), Cheshire (2007-09)
