Carthorpe (#6 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is located about 4 miles south of Bedale. In the 2011 UK census the population was reported as 258 including that of the neighbouring parish of Swainby with Allerthorpe (#24)which contributed less that 100 inhabitants.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"CARTHORPE, a township in Burneston parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; near the river Swale, 4½ miles SE of Bedale. Acres: 2,055. Real property: £2,401. Population: 347. Houses: 81. There is a Wesleyan chapel."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Carthorpe was part of Bedale Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient and ecclesiastical parish of Burneston in the wapentake of Hallikeld.
