Burrill with Cowling (#5 on map) is a civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, which includes the villages of Burrill and Cowling. It is only a 5-minute walk between the 2 small villages and they lie west of Bedale by 1 mile. According to the 2011 census the parish had a population of 104 with 50 households in total. The small parish is surrounded by sparsely populated countryside, containing mainly detached and semi-detached houses. The closest city is Ripon which is located 17 miles (27 km) away, while London is approximately 4 hours (234 miles) away. Burrill with Cowling is most accessible by the A1 major road, which runs 3.1 miles east of Burrill with Cowling. The nearest railway station is 15 miles away in Northallerton.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"BURRELL-CUM-COWLING, a township in Bedale parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 1¾ mile SW of Bedale. It has a post office, of the name of Burrell, under Bedale. Acres: 463. Real property: £1,415. Population: 111. Houses: 25."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Burrill cum Cowling was part of Bedale Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient and ecclesiastical parish of Bedale in Hang East Wapentake.
