Burg-Reuland is a Gemeinde (county) in the German-speaking region of Belgium. It was transferred to the Belgians in 1920 from Germany as a result of WWI. Its county seat is in the village of Thommen. It is named after the castle (Ger.: Burg) of Reuland. The residents are typically bilingual in French and German, though German is the language used in almost all situations, including the government. They speak a Low German dialect known as Plattdeutsch. Some residents also have a working knowledge of Luxembourgish, as many work across the border in Luxembourg. |
