Barvas (Scottish Gaelic: Barabhas) is a settlement, community and civil parish covering the northern part of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Ross and Cromarty, which was replaced in that year by the Outer Hebrides and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Western Isles council area. The community developed around a road junction. North is the road to Ness at the tip of the island; west takes the traveller to Carloway and the "West Side"; south runs the road to Stornoway. According to the 2011 Census it still has the highest concentration of Scottish Gaelic speakers in Scotland (64% of the population) with 2,037 speakers out of a total population of 3,183. The parish has an area of 412.3 sq. km (159.2 sq. miles). Most of the settlements in the parish face the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to Barvas and Ness they include: Lower Barvas, Upper Barvas, Port of Ness, Adabrock, Airigh a Bhealaich, Aird Dell, Arnol, Ballantrushal, Borve, Bragar or Bragair, Brue, Cross, Cuiashader, Dalbeg, Dalmore, Dell, Eorodale, Eoropie, Fivepenny, Habost, Knockaird, Labost, Lionel, Ness, North Galson, Shader, Shawbost, Skigersta, South Galson and Swainbost.
