Until 1844 part of Axminster and four or five surrounding parishes were considered to be in the county of Dorset. In 1844 the Dorset part of the parish of Axminster was permanently transferred to Devon. Axminster parish was abolished 1.4.1915 to become the separate parishes of Axminister or Axminster Town and Axminster Hamlets. Chardstock and Hawkchurch remained in Dorset until 1896. Thorncombe started in Devon and was transferred to Dorset in 1844. Lyme Regis has always been in Dorset.

The registration district was abolished 1.7.1936 to become parts of Honiton Registration District and Bridport Registration District.
