NOTE: There is another settlement named Arkendale near Knaresborough in what was the West Riding but is now part of North Yorkshire.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Arkengarthdale was part of Reeth Rural District. Historically, it was an ecclesiastical parish in the Gilling West Wapentake.

GENUKI states that it contained the communities of Arkle Town, Booze, Dale Head, Eskeleth, Faggergill, Langthwaite, Plantation, Scar House, Seal Houses, and Whaw. Of these, only Whaw is named on Google Earth, although there are other unnamed buildings scattered around the moor.
