Person talk:William Hathorne (4)

Hawthorne vs Hathorne [1 June 2013]

All the records indicate that the family name was spelled 'Hathorne' during the subject's lifetime. Is this a case where the name has been recorded as 'Hawthorne' solely to make a connection to a famous ancestor? However well-meaning, it's a distortion of the historical record and should be changed.--Pauldanielhenning 07:10, 1 June 2013 (EDT)

I don't think you need to read as much into the alternate name forms of Hawthorne and Hathorne as all that. But I've changed the name of the page and the appearance of the primary name (and I think you should have felt free to do as much). I invite you to add a note entry and attach it to the alternate form, which I presume, will be a form by which this person may be known in some references. --jrm03063 09:18, 1 June 2013 (EDT)

death date [25 February 2014]

The changing of the death date has prompted me to investigate the indicated sources. I do find that Anderson says, p. 885 "DEATH: Salem April 1681 [Sewall 49]". Just to be sure I checked the list of sources, and as expected, he is referring to the Diary of Samuel Sewall. He is using some edition published in 1973. The edition online is published 1878. Page 49 does cover 1681 but I can't see anything at all that gives any hint of the death of William Hathorne. Anybody? Is this the wrong page number? Is he referring to an editor's footnote in a later edition, not the diary itself? --Jrich 03:58, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
