Person talk:William Baldwin (2)

Ancestors unknown [30 November 2021]

Exercise caution if contemplating adding ancestors to William Baldwin. A tree of "Baudewyn" or (more correctly) "Baldewyn" ancestors has been constructed, but appears to be conjecture/fabrication based on a few names in the records. See the following note:

No record known ever records this surname as spelled BAWDEWYN. There is an instance when the name is interpreted as BAUDEWYN; however, in the same document the name is more clearly read as BALDEWYN. The given name BALDEWYN comes to England around the time of the Norman Invasion and remained such until the 1300s when surnames became common for ordinary people. Most of this BAUDEWYN line is pure conjecture, based on instances of the BALDEWYN "sightings" in deeds, grants, leases in Buckinghamshire and surrounding English counties. I've seen no connecting citations for any of these gentleman that descends to either Sir John Baldwin or Richard Baldwin of St. Leonards.--DataAnalyst 22:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
