From Thomas Upson (2): Birth year and children [23 November 2012]

It appears that Thomas Upson's first two children were by an earlier, and unknown, wife. In light of that, he was probably born earlier than 1620.--DMaxwell 12:51, 19 June 2012 (EDT)

If you have reason for believing that these children were from an earlier marriage, please go ahead and change his estimated birth year. But if you are relying only on the approx birth years of the children as given here, keep in mind that they might be out by a few years, and they might all be children from his known marriage. Thomas is not in my direct line, so I don't know that much about him - the 1620 birth year is truly just an estimate, helpful to place him in the right century in search results. :) --DataAnalyst 21:05, 19 June 2012 (EDT)

Well, although I am a Thomas Upson descendant I have no particular expertise on him, I just wanted to bring that up. I dont have any Upson sources to add, sadly.--DMaxwell 06:29, 20 June 2012 (EDT)

The family was poorly documented in early records. We do have his (possible) second marriage to Elizabeth Fuller in Hartford in 1646 and an abstract of his probate from Manwaring. Lacking record evidence about the births of the five children, I'm taking the liberty to adjust the nuclear family in accordance with the 1940 genealogy published by the Upson Family Association which assumes two wives, the first totally unknown and the second, Elizabeth Fuller about whom nothing but her name seems to be known. They assigned Mary and Thomas to the first wife, Hannah, Elizabeth and Stephen to the second. It should be noted, however, that there is sufficient time between the 1646 marriage and Thomas's death in 1655 for all five children to have been born to Elizabeth. It should also be noted that Mary's youngest known child with John Welton was born in 1690 and Hannah's youngest known child with Samuel Hickock was born in 1692 implying that Mary was probably born no earlier than 1645 and Hannah no earlier than 1647. Also note that the father's probate abstract indicates that Stephen was still a minor and choosing a Guardian 1 April 1674 implying birth no earlier than April 1653.--jaques1724 21:32, 22 November 2012 (EST)
Absolutely, feel free to clean them up. Literally the only record I have is the marriage to Elizabeth Fuller (NOT related to the Mayflower Fullers, as some have tried to make her). I dont know if you were doing the Upsons because they connected to another family you were working on, but there is a bit of a mystery in the next generation of Hickcoxs that may interest you. William Hickcox married a Rebecca Andrews/Andrus, whos mother is supposedly a Rebecca Carrington, supposed daughter of the executed witches John and Joanne Carrington. I have been completely unable to prove or disprove it, but I havent wanted to edit it before I had something saying it was false. I believe the claim comes from the work on the Andrus family, where it was first advanced. User:DMaxwell
