Person talk:Taliaferro Mauldin (1)

Source citations are needed to resolve problem of duplicate parents [5 August 2014]

Do either of you have source citations for the parents of Taliaferro Mauldin? Otherwise, the two sets of parents should be changed to speculative, rather than leaving them as duplicates. Thanks, --GayelKnott 01:33, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

I have the will of John Mauldin posted on the page I created. It lists Taliaferro as his son and wife as Mary. Mary was daughter of Roger Martin who sold land to John Mauldin and left property to John Mauldin in his (Roger Martin's) will. I have Roger Martin's will posted on his page and the abstracts of the purchase and sale of the property from Roger Martin, showing wife, Mary, signing dower.

I also have abstracts of probate records for his son Godfrey, who died unmarried and his estate was not settled until 1880. These are from a book and I don't know if I can post. Property was divided between his siblings and heirs of his siblings which further identifies the children of this John Mauldin. This John Mauldin is often confused with his father, John Mauldin born about 1737 who settled in Granville Co and was married to a woman named Sarah. Sarah has been assigned the last names of Lowe (based on Thomas Lowe being John Maudin's guardian when he was underage), Blake based on first name of his possible son Blake Mauldin, who may also be a brother, not a son, and White based on his connection with the estate of Jonathan White. The other poster has has Blake as the surname for is wife. It is actually a POSSIBLE, but not proven surname for his mother. The children assigned to him are incorrect, not mentioned in his will or any of his son's probate records and he was not old enough to be their father.--Nachalink 02:34, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back so quickly. You do have your arguments out there, I just didn't see all of them.
First an easy answer to one of your questions: if you have the abstracts of probate records for Godfrey, you can certainly post a written abstract, with a source citation, including the page number. It's the source citation that is actually critical, although whenever possible having a visual image is also nice. Even where you have a visual image, like the wills you have posted, it's a good idea to cite your source, as well.
As for Taliaferro and his parents. You do seem to make your case for Mary Martin and his mother, and I'll remove him from Mary Blake. At the same time, since there are no marriage records for either marriage, I have to wonder if perhaps there weren't two marriages, with Mary Blake as a first wife. Her youngest child, other than Taliaferro, was born in 1792, while Mary Martin's first child was born about 1795, so there is no overlap. And John Mauldin would have been about 23 when Mary Blake's first child was born, not an unreasonable age. And if he had already provided for the children of a first marriage, he would not have to name them in a will. Something to chew on maybe.
Again, thanks for your quick reply, --GayelKnott 04:46, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
