Susan or Susanna? [8 October 2011]
Discuss. Susanna seems much more common for the time, and is the only name used in any sources thus far cited. Phebe's my ancestor, so I haven't paid attention one way or the other.--Amelia 15:13, 8 October 2011 (EDT)
- Anderson, in his sketch of John Simson (TGM VI:343) calls her "Susan." I'm guessing that's based on the entry he cites from the Watertown VR, "John the husband of Susan Simson" was buried at Watertown on 10 June 1643 [WaVR 1:11]. Having said that, in the same sketch she is called both "Susanna" and "Susannah" in citations having to do with Parkhurst's land transaction. It would not break my heart to call everyone having any of these names "Susanna" and be done with it. But then someone will wonder why we're not entering the two alternates baptismal names in every instance. I really think there's no single satisfactory answer.--jaques1724 15:32, 8 October 2011 (EDT)
