The brothers named John: John Leonard vs. John Adam [27 June 2012]

I have some concerns about the sections dealing with RJ's brothers named John and am curious to hear what you think...

To start, I am in full agreement that there was an older brother John Leonard Ayd/t and a younger half-brother John Adam Ayd. Where we differ is in identifying which of these brothers bought the house with RJ in 1834 and which was involved in the Declaration/Naturaliztion/Passport records of 1844/1848/1851.

John Leonard Ayd (b. 1804): Supposedly RJ's older brother came to the US in the early 1830s (no record found). He would have been in his mid to late 20s when he arrived. With no record, it is impossible to know which of the brothers might have traveled with him at this time, but the early 1830s coincides with our timing for a logical arrival of RJ Ayd in Baltimore, so it is possible that they arrived in the US at about the same time. There were probably other family members along as well.

It is also known that JL Ayd was well-traveled, that he married the daughter of his 2nd cousin John Cajetan Ayd in St. Louis, MO in 1842 and that they settled with many other Ayd/t family members in Illinois after that. BUT... did he spend any time in Baltimore with his younger brother RJ prior to all of this?

  • 1833: RJ Ayd files Declaration of Intent in Baltimore. Record exists.
  • 1834: Joseph & John Ayd Buy a House - You have noted that this John was the younger one, John Adam Ayd (b. 1822). While I agree that the younger John did eventually settle in Baltimore, he would have only been 12 yrs old in 1834, which seem too young to buy property. Do you think it possible that this was actually the older JL Ayd (b. 1804) who would have been 30 years old?
  • 1844: John Aydt files Declaration of Intent in Baltimore. - In the section "1851: Brother's Passport" you have identified this John as the older brother. The Passport app's states that this John was "aged 50 years or thereabouts" in 1851 which supports that as well. However, the Passport app also states that this John was a resident of Baltimore. According to other researchers, the older JL Ayd was married and settled with other Ayd/ts in the Illinois at this time. I have not located an 1850 census record for him to back this up, however, the 1850 census does reveal that the younger JA Ayd was living in Baltimore with his wife Josephine and son Francis.

I had concluded in my notes that the John Aydt of the immigration records was the younger half-brother JA Ayd (b. 1822) and that the Passport App probably misstated his age (although I will admit that it was quite a mistake...) What do you think about these identification issues?--Cos1776 15:18, 25 June 2012 (EDT)

You're right. I was surprised to see a "John Ayd" on that 1834 deed, and knowing that the older John didn't file intent to become a citizen until 1844, I assumed that it couldn't have been him and the younger one must've come with Joseph. However, I didn't check the ages and the younger John couldn't have owned anything at age 12.  :-(

I'll edit my copy to take out the references to the younger one. There's no evidence of hardly any of these Ayds coming over. Where/when/what ship?!?!?

I'm wading through some more deed records now. More info to come.--Sketchdon 10:40, 27 June 2012 (EDT)
