Person talk:Rebecca Fairchild (4)

Rebecca's birth place changed [2 September 2011]

Unless someone has a better source for the place of birth for Rebecca Fairchild, I'm going to change her birthplace from the current Floyd County, Kentucky, to Ashe County, North Carolina. According to the census records of her father, Rebecca must have been born between 1790 and 1800 and her mother died in Ashe County in 1801. Records show the family lived in Wilkes County until Ashe was cut from it in 1799 and they appear on the Ashe County census. The family hadn't moved; but they found themselves in a new county.

The following quote provided by Chris Fairchild 26 Aug 2008: According to Jean Fairchild Gilmore's book, Early Fairchilds in America, under the Abiud Fairchild family, page 114-116, it says: "In 1795 Abiud is again in Wilkes County, N.C. where he appears on that county's tax list. In 1801, his wife Rebecca is supposed to have died. There is some confusion as to Rebecca's surname. For this writer, the DAR application #502690 where the applicant has put Johnson, crossed it out and entered Jackson, the name of Jackson is acceptable. There is also the argument for the surname Jackson in that one term of Abiud's enlistment of three months in the American Revolution in North Carolina was that he was under the command of Capt. William Jackson, whose daughter he could have married. There is no doubt a second marriage was to a woman whose name may have been Johnson, causing the Jackson/Johnson confusion".--Janiejac 15:28, 2 September 2011 (EDT)
