Do you have any idea why the notes from "Harry Long" state that Mathew was of Swedish descent??? I wanted to just edit this, but as it was a quote from another site, I did not want to.
He was born in Scotland, of Scots parents. His family had many business connections in Holland. When he first appears in the records on this continent, he is at Staten Island, among the Dutch of New Amsterdam. His wife is Dutch.
Why Swedish? I'm really curious....

Hi Linda, there do appear to be some other Swedish families in the area of Smiths Creek during that time frame, so Mr. Long may have been taking an educated guess more than anything... I'd just leave it as is, to provide the "alternate view", just in case.
