Witchcraft? [15 June 2009]

I can't find documentation Mary was accused of witchcraft - I can't find her mentioned anywhere in the 1692 Salem (and nearby towns, including Gloucester) witch trial information. If you know more, please post! Thanks - Brenda--Kennebec1 10:26, 13 June 2009 (EDT)

I don't know about Mary

Felt, Joseph B., History of Ipswich, Essex, and Hamilton, pp. 207, 342, mentions Mary wife of Hugh Row (this would be Mary Prince his 2nd wife), Phebe wife of Timothy Day, widow Rachel Vinson (Rachel Varney Langton Cook Vinson), on 24 Sep 1692; and Esther wife of Samuel Elwell, Rebechah wife of Richard Dike, and Abigail daughter of Hugh Row on 30 Oct

Don't know if this helps or not.

  • It helps alot... clearly Mary Langton Day had relatives by marriage who were accused, and is Rachel Vinson the same Rachel Varney Langton who is her mother? That must have been difficult!
I thought I'd try to track down whether there was any documentation for the note on Mary Langton's page regarding witchcraft. I have seen the story that she was killed by lightening, but I couldn't find anything regarding witchcraft. So perhaps the note was carried over from other relatives? Hi, Brenda,

You're probably right about the "carry over" of info. And yes, Rachel Vinson is Rachel Varney, mother of the Langton girls. Rachel Varney had quite a life.

One source for Salem witch trials that is on-line is at University of Virginia. Url is http://etext.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft/

And best current source for Varney family is The American Genealogist Vol. 81 Nos. 03/04. Don't know if this is in my Wiki notes yet or not -- since this is not my primary database, and frequent gedcom uploads seem to cause problems.
