Person talk:Mary Catlin (3)

This Mary Catlin b 10 Jul 1666, in various genealogies, is claimed by parents John Catlin & Mary Marshall and John Catlin & Mary Baldwin....cunundrum.

I have her as dau of John and Mary Marshall Catlin. and died young. The dau of John and Mary Baldwin b 1665 was kidnapped in the Deerfield Massacre and died on the march to Canada.

Savage has: CATLIN, or CATLING, JOHN, Hartford, s. of Thomas, m. 27 July 1665, Mary Marshall, had Mary, b. 10 July 1666; Samuel, 4 Nov. 1672, John, 27 Apr. 1676; Thomas, 27 Aug. 1678; and Benjamin, 1 Feb. 1681. Hinman, 123, 203, 58. By Porter I feel able to add, Jonathan, 1683, and Hannah, 1685.

JOHN, Deerfield, came from Newark, N. J. bef. 1684, with his mo. vol. 1, p. 349 Isabel, but they had some yrs. bef. gone thither from Conn. of course. The bapt. name of her first h. is unkn. for sec. she m. James Northam of Wethersfield, wh. d. 1662, and she rem. and had third h. Joseph Baldwin of Hadley. Catlin, the name of whose w. is not kn. had John, b. 1663, Joseph, Jonathan, and four or five ds. of wh. Elizabeth m. James Corse. She with her br. Joseph (wh. left s. John), and Jonathan, and the f. were all k. by the Ind. and Fr. in the assault, 29 Feb. 1704. Yet the name is kept up in the vicin.

Barbour Collection for Hartford has CATLING, CATTELLING, CATTELING John, son Thomas, m Mary MARSHALL, July 27, 1665* (*Perhaps "1663") Mary, dau John, b July 10, 1666

for Wethersfield has CATLIN, CATTELLIN

John, m Mary ______, Sept 23, 1662
John, son John & Mary, b July 26, 1663

Savage provides a sketch of Joseph Baldwin which includes the following abstract: "… by a will in 1680 he dispos. of est. judiciously, thus, ld. in Hadley to childr. of his eldest s. Joseph, then d. ld. in Milford to Benjamin, Jonathan, and David; personal prop. to his eldest d. Hannah, w. of Jeremiah Hull of New Haven, to Mary, w. of John Catlin of Arthur Kill, N. J. to Elizabeth w. of James Warriner of Springfield, to John, and Hannah Hawkes, ch. of John of Hatfield, in right of their mo. Martha, dec. and to Sarah, w. of Samuel Bartlett of Northampton, wh. was ano. ch. perhaps youngest, of the testator."

In Charles Candee Baldwin's sketch of Joseph Baldwin Baldwin Genealogy, p. 480, his daughter Mary is identified as the wife of John Catlin of Arthur Kill.

Sheldon's History of Deerfield, p. 105, identifies the Mary Catlin who married Thomas French as daughter of John Catlin and Mary Baldwin.

These references, plus the fact that Joseph Baldwin had married this John Catlin's mother (second marriage for him, third for her) points strongly to John Catlin and his wife Mary Baldwin as the parents of this Mary.

There was another John Catlin, this the son of Thomas Catlin of Hartford, who is identified both by the Hartford VRs and Barbour's Early Hartford Families as marrying on Mary Marshall shortly after the Wethersfield John married Mary Baldwin. The Wethersfield VRs, as cited above, do not provide this Mary's surname.

The genealogy in the Deerfield history clearly indicates that Mary, daughter of John and Mary (Baldwin) Catlin is the one who married Thomas French and who died as a result of the 29 February 1703/04 Deerfield raid. Barbour's Early Hartford families clearly indicates that Mary, the daughter of John and Mary (Marshall) Catlin is the one who married John Burnham of Hartford and died 13 December 1730 [TAG 67:44 (1992)].--jaques1724 23:15, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
