Person talk:Mary Brigham (6)

Source for name spelling change? [16 April 2011]

Jbenedict,

I notice that you've changed her surname from Brigham to Bridgham. What is the source for this change?

If you have a source for this particular spelling, please add it and leave it as Bridgham, but add Brigham as an alternate spelling (which I've gone and done in this case); if you do not please, change it back and add Bridgham as an alternate spelling instead. Use of alternate spellings help researchers find the record no matter how it's spelled.

Thanks.

I have three sources: ["Benedict Topics"] by Bob Benedict; Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Volume II and LaRue Olsen.

  • Benedict Topics is a reference website for early Benedict information and the webpage titled, Who Were Thomas Benedict and Mary Bridgham? has a specific page on this couple.
  • The reference hard cover book by Elwyn Benedict has some further research. Volume I by Henry Benedict uses "Mary Bridgum" but that is not commonly mentioned in other literature. Volume II by Elwyn Benedict, in the introduction, uses "Mary Bridgham".
  • LaRue Olsen carried out an acedemic study of the British origins of Thomas and Mary, and published the article The English Origins of the First Thomas Benedict of Long Island and Norwalk, CT in The Connecticuty Nutmegger, Volume 39 Number 3 for December 2006, of which I have a copy. On page 359 she writes, " [Thomas Benedict] married about 1639, his stepsister, Mary Bridgham a.k.a. Bridgum, daughter of John Bridham and Grace (___),

These are the best sources available to me and so they are the reason for my suggestion of spelling.

Thanks, jbenedict; by the way, it's good to "sign" your posts. You can do so by clicking on the "signature" button above the edit window (second from the right), or typing ~~~~ at the end of your post. Jillaine 12:33, 16 April 2011 (EDT)

I really appreciate your help, Jilliane. My first foray into WeRelate, although I have worked on other Wikis. Have also just worked on Surname:Benedict and hopefully the changes are agreeable. Now to try that signature thingy ... --JBenedict 13:51, 16 April 2011 (EDT)

We are thrilled to have you here. Always great to have new energy and someone with expertise on a focused area. If you are doing early Colonial New England research you may want to check out The Great Migration category. Jillaine 16:43, 16 April 2011 (EDT)
