Parents of Louis / Ludovicus Lehrer [15 March 2013]

Ludovicus Lehrer was known as Louis, he was born in Bas Rhin, France during 1730

This article is a reveiw of the various sets of parents who have been suggested for Louis and then my subsequent research and conclusion based on primary evidence.

Christian Lehrer and Eve [15 March 2013]

Some direct descendants living in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, have previously listed Christian or Jacques as Louis's father but then it changed to just Christian or Christianus, so I assumed that a level of information had been uncovered that made Christian the most probable option.

Christian Lehrer and Eve Wirdin had the following child;

* Louis Lehrer 1730 – 1795 &1759 Agnes Klein 1728 – 1790

Christianus Lehrer and Eva Riedinger had the following children;

* Christianus 1689
* Anna Maria 1693
* Maria Margaretha 1704
* Ludovicus 1730-1795 &1759 Agnetis Klein 1728-1790

The children recorded against this couple sees a twenty-six year difference between Louis and the next youngest and forty-one years between Louis and the eldest. While not impossible this seems highly unlikely especially considering how old this would make his proposed parents at the time of his birth.

The eldest child of Christianus and Eva is also named Christianus and being aged 41 when Louis is born I thought it was more likely that this Christian Lehrer is the father of Louis.

I considered it to be possible that documents listed the parents of Louis as Christianus and Eve Lehrer, considering that there is a question between Eva Riedinger and Eve Wirdin, researchers could have made a guess that Eve is actually Eva and because they live in the right area then this is the relevant family.

One family tree using this couple cite a marriage source for Louis Lehrer and Agnes Klein - Married 14 May 1759, Birkenwald, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. This source is listed as cited as coming from another researcher, Carolyn Beno.

Ludovicus Lehrer and Marie Elisabeth Rebmann [15 March 2013]

Joannes Jacobus Lehrer ca 1670-1729 married in 1696 to Elisabetha Hennau 1668-1728 and they had the following child;

* Ludovicus 1706-1732 and in 1727 he married Maria Elisabeth Rebmann and they had the following child;
   * Louis,Ludovicus who married in 1759 to Agnes [ Kleinin] Klein ca 1728-1790

I found another option that provided the parents of Louis as Joannes Jacobus Lehrer and Elisabetha Hennau as they had a son named Ludovicus. I can only assume that this should be considered unlikely due to age differences.

Another cited marriage source is that Ludovicus Lehrer, the son of Louis Lehrer and Elisabeth Reebomin married Agnes Klein (Kleinin) on the 15th January 1759 in Romanswiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France.

Possibilities [15 March 2013]

Is it possible that there are 2 Louis Lehrer's of about the same age, living in Bas-Rhin, Alsace at the same time?

* Yes highly likely as particularly at this time period it was not unusual to have the same names repeated often throughout related families.

Is it likely that there were 2 Louis Lehrer's living in Bas-Rhin, Alsace, who both married during 1759?

* Yes it is certainly possible.

Is it likely that they both married a woman called Agnes Klein.

* Starting to get far less likely but it is possible.

Assumptions

  • People who are direct descendants are more inclined to ensure that their research is accurate.
  • The higher the level of detail provided in a family tree indicates a greater level of research in compiling that tree.

Observations

  • Family trees that include a larger amount of our known ancestors and their families are more inclined to place Christian Lehrer and Eve Wirdin or Christianus Lehrer and Eva Riedinger as the parents of Louis Lehrer.
  • Family trees that place Ludovicus Lehrer and Marie Elisabeth Rebmann as the parents of Louis Lehrer tend have very limited information on the births, deaths and children of Louis Lehrer and Agnes Klein.
  • It was not until 1772 that the Lehrer name appears for the first time in Dabo. More precisely in the parish register, that year Louis and his wife Agnes baptized their son Antoine (21st October 1772). On this occasion they said they came from Birkenwald.
  • Their elder children were baptised in Romanswiller.
  • Romanswiller and Birkenwald are only 5.6km away from each other.

Primary Evidence [16 March 2013]

I could not find documents for the marriage in May, maybe this is a census document following their marriage in January.

In the Bas-Rhin archived documents there are archived documents for Romanswiller.

From the Romanswiller Index of documents, go to the Catholic Parish Register 1695 – 1760. On Page 66 is the marriage registration for Louis Lehrer and Agnes Klein.

My translation is not good so I don't really know - but based on what I can see it looks to me like the parents are Ludovicus Lehrer and Elisabetha Reebinonnin and also Joannes Georgii Klien, they were living in Birkenwald and went to church in Romanswiller.

Someone else has indicated that Louis (Ludovicus) was from Birkenwald and Agnes (Agnetis) was from Romanswiller and with the tradition of marrying in the town of the wives parents, this is why the marriage was in Romanwiller and it is highly likely that the local authorities in Birkenwald would have noted this at a later time.--JeffreyRLehrer 01:43, 15 March 2013 (EDT)
