Person talk:Lavina Brownfield (4)

Names, dates, and sources [19 June 2011]

The text, Descendants of Robert Brownfield, by Royce Miller Hunt has her as named Lovina and born in Pendleton County, KY 06 NOV 1806

Hi, Dana. I've added my sources, particularly the Anthony Christensen source. Both his work and the work of Royce Miller Hunt are secondary and derivative, and should really be compared against original sources. Christensen does give his sources, which Hunt does not. However, Hunt's work seems to be reasonably well researched (as much as one can tell without his having cited any sources), and since he was focusing on the Brownfields rather than the Dunns, I've moved the birth date he gives to the preferred position, even though her cemetery marker (also a secondary source for a birth date) agrees with Chrisensen. On the other hand, given that she was born in November, the 1860 and 1870 Census records (also secondary for birth dates) agree with Hunt.
As for her given name, I've left that as Lavina, since she seemed to use that more than she used (if she ever did) Lovina. And as you can see from the 1870 census record, people could sometimes be a little (or a lot) casual about the spelling of names.--GayelKnott 23:17, 18 June 2011 (EDT)
