By the various descriptions, both here and various given in Long Island histories, Musketa or Muskeeta Cove was the name of a Plantation in Oyster Bay Twp. Typically Plantations may have contained as few as a handful of families. Inhabitants of Musketa Cove were enumerated with the rest of Oyster Bay inhabitants in various census lists up until the time when Glen Cove became the official name of the area. I have no objection if you would like to create a "place" Musketa Cove type: Plantation. Personally, I would tend to put: Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York, USA and in the description :Musketa Cove, but I'd like to see Oyster Bay somewhere, since Musketa Cove seemed to be governed/overseen by Oyster Bay, not totally independent during that time period.--Neal Gardner 16:26, 6 August 2010 (EDT) Hello Neal, Historic names and current names are not always the same. And how to list them is always a question and which answers are different from forum to forum. Please check how I redid the place line. A few years ago, I helped a person from VA. They looked high and low and could not find records for their relatives. The records were present just a county or so away in WV. While many of her relatives were born in VA, many lived through the transition of the western counties into WV. But every single one was listed as born in WV even prior to 1862. That had a simple fix once the problem was recognized. On WeRelate, what is the standard? I hope that people do not get carried away with making all sort of specialized fields. Why? Because they do not translate very well via GEDCOM version 5.5. The earlier versions of GEDCOM were even worse. Cross platform compatibility is something everyone should remember. Thanks for the info and heads up. Jrcrin001 21:24, 6 August 2010 (EDT) Hi Jrcrin001, I've only been contributing here about a year, so I don't pretend to know all the conventions, but I believe that you can satisfy your Gedcom requirements by placing what you would like as an Alternative name under (in this case) Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York, United States. Many people like to put Long Island in their place name, but what WeRelate tries to follow for USA is [loosely]: 1.City, village, town, township, borough, etc, hence smallest area...even settlement or plantation. 2.County or parish 3.State 4.Country Since Long Island doesn't really fit any of those categories, it's kind of an orphan element of a place name, which [for me]seems to belong in the description box with other geographical names like Mahoning Valley, Delaware Gap, etc. The Water Cooler would be a great place to get feedback on what others think, or you could ask an Admin or Dallan if I'm correct in my thinking. We all have a slightly different opinion, but there is a general range of flexibility here, especially when it comes to Gedcom issues. Hope I've helped some. By the way there is information on creating place names in the Guidelines. Regards...--Neal Gardner 12:29, 7 August 2010 (EDT)
