Does anyone know why they had so many names? [20 April 2012]

I haven't found a concrete tie to this man, however, my Great Grandfather is William Young Marshall Wilkerson. I am very interested in this person - as my family member has four names and two match this person. Does anyone know of a Purvey from Sumner county TN born 1811? That is William's dad?
