There are at least 4 variations on his ancestry, as follows:
from Wentworth Genealogy: English and American (1878), pp. 8-9, 26, citing the Wentworth pedigree compiled by William Flower in 1588 |
from Flower's Visitation of Yorkshire, 1563-64 (ed. 1881), pp. 340, 345 |
from Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire, 1665-66, with additions (ed. 1899), 1:294 |
from ThePeerage.com |

While the Visitations themselves are not highly reliable, they present at least a speculative pedigree. Combined with more recent information (including the additions made in the 1899 edition, which were based on wills, parish registers, marriage licences and other documents, without specific citations), they have been used to provide a speculative ancestry for John Wentworth.--DataAnalyst 02:49, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
- I found Flower's Wentworth pedigree (as published in The Wentworth Genealogy) after cleaning up the 3 generations prior to this John Wentworth, and thus did not consider it in the cleanup. I cannot evaluate its accuracy. It includes some details (such as the John Wentworth who married Alice Bisset leaving his estate to his nephew) that have a ring to truth, and was still accepted by Sir Bernard Burke in 1883 (Burke's Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, p. 575). However, it must have been available to the editors of the Visitations, and neither uses it, although the editor of Flower's Visitation mentions in a footnote another editor (Hunter) who seems to follow it.
- In any case, the ancestry of this John Wentworth is clearly speculative.--DataAnalyst 16:44, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
