[add comment] [edit] possible obituary [29 dec 2011]Herman, this obituary appeared in the Boyden Reporter (Boyden, Sioux County, Iowa) 29 Oct 1925 pg 1 "Jan Scholten, Sr. Mr. Jan Scholten, Sr. a Sioux county pioneer, passed away at his home two miles west of Boyden on Sunday morning at about 11 a.m., at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 11 days. His death was the result of a serious illness for several days with pneumonia. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the home and interment was made in the Nassau cemetery at Alton, Iowa. Jan Scholten, Sr. was born on the 14th day of May, 1846, in Zutphen, Gelderland, Netherlands. He came to this country and settled in Sioux county in the year of 1871. After living here seven years he returned to the Netherlands and was married to Miss Jennie Scholten, returning with his bride to America. Eight children were born to this union: Evert, of Springfield, S.D.; Harry, of Hull; Gerrit, Anna, Jan Jr. and Bert, all of Boyden; Mrs. Hattie Scholten, of Hull, and Mrs. Lizzie Weersink, of Chicago, Ill. His wife preceded him in death some eight years ago, and his burial will be made beside her grave. Beside the children who are left to mourn his death, there is a large number of relatives. Deceased was a devout Christian and a member of the Christian Reformed church of Hull. For many years he was very active in church work. He had a large acquaintance in Sioux county and was one of those pioneers who withstood the hardships of the early day.
