Person talk:John Hardy (17)

Notes of Caution

  • Page is in progress. Records are being assembled sorted out and posted. There is confusion between the families of this John Hardy and his father (supposedly Capt. John Hardy who m. Olive Council). There is a lot of misinformation out there, so proceed with caution.
Find A Grave entry 74219156 says "Recent researchers question whether a John Hardy Jr. existed, as John Bennett Boddie and some other early researchers believed, as all available records appear to refer to the same man." I haven't spotted a journal article supporting this statement, but a look at the data suggests that it makes sense.
The father of Olive was clearly born earlier than 1637, and the John Hardy who married Olive Council appears to be a contemporary of Alice (Tucker) Allen, and thus reasonable to assign as her second husband. The source for the children currently assigned to the John Hardy & Olive Council family seems to be the 1935 book Hardy and Hardie, past and present, which doesn't provide sources for its claims (and was given a lukewarm review in The American Genealogist 54(1978):184 upon its 3rd printing). It is certain that at least some of these supposed children lived in Virginia at the time (for example, there was a George Hardy, named George Hardy Jr in a 1654 will, in the Isle of Wight from at least the 1650's to the 1680's), but there appears to be no evidence to say they were the children of John and Olive.
It is entirely feasible that the John Hardy who married Olive Council had children Olive, Lucy, and Deborah by his first wife, and later married Alice (Tucker) Allen. There is no evidence that any of the other children currently assigned to him were his children, or that there was an additional John Hardy who married Alice (Tucker) Allen.
I plan to merge this John Hardy with the John Hardy who married Olive Council, and delete/remove the children not supported by John's will. If you disagree, please provide a reason/source. Thanks.--DataAnalyst 15:11, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
