Austonley and Cartworth [4 February 2024]

Once they moved to Cartworth the Battyes gave their address as Brownhill Lane. This extends west from the hamlet of Cartworth on the south side of Brownhill Reservoir. Austonley is a few miles away on the opposite side of the reservoir.

A map of Holme Valley overlaid with a 19th century map of the Holmfirth area was found on 'Wikimedia Commons' with their code number 11062487135. This is a very good representation of the area in the Victorian era. Today Austonley has disappeared from all maps. To find it look for the villages of Holme and Upperthong and estimate a halfway point between them.--Goldenoldie 12:50, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
