From John Fletcher (9): John Bates was a step-son. [1 June 2010]

Currently the page shows John Fletcher b. 1 Dec 1656. He is not listed in this family in Source:Fletcher, Edward Hatch. Fletcher Family History : The Descendants of Robert Fletcher of Concord, Mass, p. 27-28. But looking up the birth record in Source:Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Vital Records of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849, p. 64, explains the problem. That record says "Fletcher, John Bates, s. William, bp. 1 : 12 m : 1656, a 15 y. PR1". This is presumably the source upon which this page is based, but it is wrong in several regards.

1. The twelfth month is February, not December, so this date is 1 Feb 1656/57.
2. This is a baptism, not a birth.
3. The record says John is 15 y., so birth in 1641/42.
4. This is John Bates, the step-son of William Fletcher, a son of his first wife Lydia by her first husband Edward Bates.
