[add comment] [edit] The identity of Benjamin Sabin's wife Elizabeth and the date of their marriage. [12 November 2022]The 1994 Sabin Genealogy, page 33, states that Deacon Benjamin Sabin married "Elizabeth Davis 4 Nov 1700 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. She was born 18 Apr 1678 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA, the daughter of Samuel Davis and Hannah Edwards." Anson Titus' 1882 article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register states that Benjamin married "Elizabeth Davis, Nov. 4, 1700. Roxbury Records." He does not identify her parents nor does he state a date of her birth. The published Roxbury Vital Records state only that "SABIN, Benjamin, and Elizabeth _____, [married] ____ 1700." In addition to the Titus article and the printed Roxbury records, Torrey cites a Roxbury manuscript, which is not further identified, and does cite the Davis surname and November 4 date for the marriage. The Elizabeth Davis who was born at Roxbury, 18 April 1678, was the daughter of John and Mary (Devotion) Davis. She married Thomas Mayo as is proved by John Davis' will which includes a legacy for his daughter Elizabeth Mayo from her grandfather Devotion. The Elizabeth Davis who married Benjamin Sabin was not the daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Edwards) Davis. That Elizabeth was born in Northampton August 1680 and married William Allis c. 1704. Based on the above, it would seem that we cannot identify Elizabeth's parents and we cannot even be sure that she was a Davis. The November 4 date is probably correct, but we can only reasonably sure that the marriage took place in Roxbury sometime in 1700.--jaques1724 19:19, 12 November 2022 (UTC) |
