1930 U.S. Census [5 March 2012]

Any ideas on finding Claude Jones and Marcia Mathwig on the 1930 census?--Metro09 12:16, 4 March 2012 (EST)

They should be in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac, since the census date was 1 April, and that is where Wanda May was born 15 March. I tried running first name only, restricting the place to FdL, FdL exactly, for both Claude, Marcia, and Wanda Mae, with no results. I also tried looking for some of their children born before 1930 (Melvin, Claude, even Wanda), any place in the US, again with no results. This was all on Ancestry. I also did a bit of a check, for Claude Jones and for Melvin Jones, on Family Search (they have a slightly better search engine), also no results.
It's possible they were missed in the census for some reason, but you'd then have to show that they were in Fond du Lac. If you have an address for them in 1930 (from Wanda's birth certificate, or from a city directory, or maybe a phone book), you could then go through the census for that address (even more tedious than looking for Jones!), and see if the address is there, and who it shows. (Or even looking for the names of neighbors, if you have access to a criss-cross directory -- or whatever they are called these days.) If they owned their home, there should be tax and property records, which would also give a clue as to how long they lived in the city. Or if the next children after Wanda were born in Fond Du Lac, you could argue that they should be in the Census, but aren't. That's about the best that I can think of, and how easy it would be to do would depend on where you are and how easy it would be to get the records.--GayelKnott 13:54, 4 March 2012 (EST)

I'll keep poking around on this one...seemed like it would have been an easy find...but the mystery continues.--Metro09 21:30, 4 March 2012 (EST)

Might be they moved right around that time, and were missed by the census takers in both places -- one of the reasons it would be useful to have actual addresses. I have grandparents who aren't in the 1920 census because they were all visiting elsewhere and no one was home at the time of the census, so that sort of thing did happen. (An item in the local newspaper indicates they were out of town.) Good luck--GayelKnott 12:52, 5 March 2012 (EST)
