Catherine Byrne/s in Tasmania during the 1850's [16 January 2018]

Trying to learn more about Catherine and locate some information that may tell me something about where in Ireland she came from or who her parents were has led me to look up a number of records that show a number of women called Catherine Byrne/s around the 1850's in Tasmania, Australia.

There appear that there were seven convicts, most of whose lives were recorded with significant detail.

1. Catherine Byrne was a 24 year old convict who arrived on board the Arabian which departed Dublin, Ireland on 22 November 1846 and arrived in Tasmania on 25 February 1847 with a 7 year sentence. She was granted permission to marry on 20 November 1849 to Edward Bush, a free settler. There is no corresponding marriage record and in 1850 she was working for James Betts but then assigned hard labour for not showing up for work. Catherine from the Arabian was again granted permission to marry on 22 October 1850 to George Evans, a convict who arrived on the Tortoise. They married in Launceston on 11 November 1850. In the Cornwall Chronicle newspaper, page 88; 8 Feb 1851, Catherine was listed as having a Ticket of leave granted. After her sentence expired on 9 July 1853 she departed to go to Melbourne on 3 August 1853 where George and Catherine used the surname Smith.

2. Catherine Byrne was a convict who arrived on board the East London which left Dublin, Ireland on 10 May 1843 when she was 23. She was granted permission to marry on 30 November 1846 and in Hobart on 15 January 1847 she married Joseph Tomlinson, a free settler. In the Cornwall Chronicle, newspaper, page 208; 30 Mar 1850, Catherine was recommended for a conditional pardon.

3. Catherine Byrne was a convict who arrived on Bomangee 2. In the Cornwall Chronicle, page 8, 11 August 1855, she was granted a Ticket of leave.

4. Catherine Byrne from County Limerick was sentenced on 20 July 1847 to 7 years. She arrived in Tasmania on board the John Calvin, on 18 May 1848 and she died on 13 March 1850 from acute dysentry.

5. Catherine Byrnes was a convict who was 41 in January 1815. She arrived on board the Kangaroo, she was later sent to NSW on board the Alexander.

6. Catherine Byrne age 43 from Dublin was a convict sentenced for 10 years, she arrived on board the Martin Luther which left Dublin on 8 June 1852. She was employed by William Bailey in 1853. On page 8 of the Cornwall Chronicle, 21 October 1854, Catherine Byrne (Martin Luther), Catherine Burns (Blackfriar) and Catherine Byrne (Blackfriar) all had Tickets of Leave granted. She was recommended for a Pardon on 9 September 1856. In the Cornwall Chronicle, page 8, 13 June 1857, Catherine Byrne from Martin Luther was granted a Conditional Pardon.

7. Catherine Byrne from Wicklow was a convict aged 21 who was sentenced for 7 years. She left Kingston on 24 January 1851 and arrived on board the Blackfriar on 29 May 1851. On page 8 of the Cornwall Chronicle, 21 October 1854, Catherine Byrne (Martin Luther), Catherine Burns (Blackfriar) and Catherine Byrne (Blackfriar) all had Tickets of Leave granted, meaning that they could seek employment outside of the female factories. On page 8 of the Cornwall Chronicle, 31 May 1856, Catherine Byrne (Blackfriar) was recommended for a Conditional Pardon and her sentence was considered served on 29 June 1857. Two Catherine Burns from the Blackfriar were granted permissions to marry however there was one Catherine Burns and one Catherine Byrne.

After considering the convicts, there are more women called Catherine Byrne/s so the next challenge is finding out when they arrived and hopefully connecting individual references to find out more about them.

8. Catherine Byrnes who I am researching was from Ireland, born sometime between 1832 and 1836 and married Henry Price in Hobart during 1858 and having one child before moving to Sydney in early 1861 before the birth of their second child. It must be noted that I don't trust the ages and dates that Henry Price provided and (7) Catherine Byrne from Wicklow had her sentence expire in June 1857.

9. Catherine Byrne was 26 years old when she departed Southampton on board the Kingston and arrived in Tasmania on 26 August 1854.

10. Catherine Byrnes was 22 when she married in Hobart, Tasmania on 15 Dec 1845 to Edward Smith who was also 22.

11. Catherine Byrne arrived on the Hooghly on 21 December 1859.

12. Catherine Byrnes was 27 when she married in Hobart, Tasmania on 14 August 1860 to George Abbott who was 33.

13. Catherine Byrnes was 20 when she married in Oatlands, Tasmania on 29 Feb 1876 to George Baker who was 27. They had a daughter Katherine Baker on 20 March 1877 in Oatlands, Tasmania.
