Person talk:Amon Dearnley (2)

Naming problems [12 July 2010]

It's difficult to be sure what his name was.

He was baptised as Amon but occurs variously with a single & double "M" in the middle, with and without a leading "H" and trailing "D", both letters which would be readily dropped in the local dialect.

When he married Ellen Crosland the register entry was made out as "Hammond Dearnally" (Dearnley is a name with lots of variations as well) but he signed it "Amond". As this is the only signature of his I've ever seen I tend to prefer this as the definitive version but who knows?

This is a useful Dearnley site.[1]--Iang 09:28, 12 July 2010 (EDT)
