Person talk:Agnes Moseby (6)

Marriage and birth dates for Agnes Robinson [11 September 2024]

Ann/Agnes Robinson married "Rene Leforce, Junr." on 10 Mar 1774 in Botetourt Co., VA. Security and witnesses were James Robinson, "An" Leforce, and Samuel Leforce.

While the register states "Rene Leforce, Junr." this does not necessarily indicate that this Rene was the second Rene Laforce. My understanding is that the use of junior/senior in colonial times was made to differentiate between and elder and younger persons of the same name, and not a permanent part of their identity.

The evidence seems to show that this Agnes Robinson was married to Rene Laforce [III] b. 1754, son of Rene Laforce [II] (b. 1723) and Agnes Moseby (b. 1725). Goochland records show the following:

Will of Rene Laforce [I] 16 Aug 1728 Goochland Co. Deed Book 1, p. 37 wife, Sarah; children: Rene [II], Sarah, Rachel Laforce.

Rene Laforce [II] married Agnes Moseby and according to one book had the following children: Zulima, Trephena, Randolph, Samuel, Barney, Rene [III] (1754), William, Robert (1756), Ann (1758), Agnes (1760), Judith (1765), and Monsire (1768). The christening and birth dates for Robert through Monsire are listed in the Douglas register.

There are several deeds involving Rene Laforce [II] in Goochland records, including the gift of an enslaved person to Robert "Cawthon" (Goochland Deed Book 8, p. 401). A Robert "Cawthon" married Zulina Laforce 8 Feb 1760 in Goochland.

It appears that Rene Laforce [II] was in Goochland until 10 Dec 1772. On that date, he and his wife, Agnes [Moseby], sold his plantation "where he upon now lives" to "Anderson Peers" with witnesses Joseph Woodson, Richard Wade, and Wm. DuVal Atty (Goochland Deed Book 10, p.301). On the same date, he sold 50 acres to Richard Wade witnessed by William DuVal atty, Joseph Woodson, and Anderson Peers (Goochland Deed Book 10, p. 303).

The depositions taken 8 Aug 1765, and listed in Chalkeys, were likely taken in Goochland County for a case that originated in Augusta County.

The confusion with which Rene Laforce Agnes Robinson married is understandable since there are at least three Agnes Laforces: Agnes Laforce b. 1725 married to Rene Laforce [II] who was born 1725; their daughter, Agnes Laforce b. 1760 who married a Mahan; then Agnes Robinson who in 1774 married Rene Laforce [III] in Botetourt Co., VA. Botetourt was formed in 1770 from Augusta County.

Could the identity of the James Robinson who witnessed Rene and Agnes' 1774 marriage provide clues to the identity of Agnes Robinson's father? To provide a bond, one needed to be at least 21 in Virginia, which means this James Robinson had to have been born by 1753.--Jpetrozzo 22:16, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
