Zelma E. Vandergrift was born in 1887. Her father was Drury Emmett Vandergrift (b. Dec 21, 1861, d. Feb 26, 1912) and her mother was Martha (known as Mattie) Letitia Adams (b. Oct. 19, 1864, d. Jan 14, 1940). Zelma was a housewife. She had four siblings. Her sister Dona (b. 1887), her brother Wilbur (b. 1905 in Hobart), her brother Raymond Alton Vandergrift (known as Alton, b. 1900, d. July 6, 1968 in Muskogee Hospital),her brother Ogle Vandergrift, born in 1895 in Butler, MO. None of the Vandergrifts other than Zelma ever had any children. Another sister, named Lura, born in 1891, died at age 1 year, 9 months. Zelma died at the Central State Griffin Memorial Hospital, Norman, OK, a mental health facility, on November 13, 1961, of a cerebral vascular accident due to cerebral arteriosclerosis, which people in those days often then called “hardening of the arteries”. She spent the last year and two months of her life in that facility, after a long slow loss of her mental faculties. She was buried in Hobart, OK.
