    Zebulon Strong
Birth: 7 Sep 1788 Thetford, Orange County, Vermont, USA
Death: 12 Aug 1875 (aged 86) Ohio, USA
Burial: Wesleyan Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA
    Memorial #: 133088495
Bio: He was the son of Captain John Strong (1728-1795) and Deliverance Grant (1743-1810). His mother was first married to Dr. Samuel Cary, who died in January of 1784, in New Hampshire. Zebulon had several half-sibings, who were the children of his mother and Dr. Cary. He had one full sibling, who was John (born 3-25-1787 and died around 1873 in Cincinnati).

Zebulon came to Cincinnati in 1806, and was one of its earliest pioneers. In fact, he was a member of the Cincinnati Pioneer Association. He enlisted to fight in The War of 1812, in David Oliver's Company of the Ohio Militia, on 7-5-1814. He was discharged on 8-18-1814, and he received some bounty land for his service.

He married Hannah Rogers on Feb. 14, 1816, in Pleasant Hill, Ohio. She was born on May 13, 1791 in New Jersey, the daughter of Henry Rogers and Phoebe Burnett. Her father, Henry Rogers (b. 12-25-1752 and d. 7-17-1840), served in the Revolutionary War.

Zebulon and Hannah were very much in love and they were deeply devoted to each other. They had eight children: Sered (born 11-26-1816, died 3-12-1831); Phoebe Burnett (born 1-17-1819, died about 1885, married Luther Dayton); Elon (born 12-24-1820, died 4-17-1902, married Elizabeth Skillman); William Cary (born 8-12-1823, died 7-12-1853, married Sarah S. Salor); Henry Rogers (born 9-7-1825, died 2-1-1908); Joel (born 10-14-1827, died 12-12-1885); Martha Hunter (born 6-9-1830, died 7-31-1876, never married); and Elizabeth Cogswell (born 1-17-1833, died 9-30-1901, married John J. Russell on 1-11-1877).

Their daughter Phoebe married Luther Dayton on 4-14-1842. They moved to Xenia, Illinois (Clay County) and raised their family there. Their children were Samuel Cary, Louisa, Zebulon, Alphonso, and Martha, known as "Mattie." Phoebe was said to have died in 1885, and her husband died on 8-20-1888. They were probably buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Their son William married Sarah S. Salor on 7-11-1843, and they had three children (Anna, Zachary Taylor, and William H.) But William died on 7-12-1853, leaving his wife with three small children to raise. She worked as a seamstress to support them.

Their son Henry married at least twice (to Elizabeth, and to Mary). They lived in Greene County, Indiana. He was buried in the Worthington Cemetery there.

Their daughter Martha left everything she had to her sister Elizabeth, in her will, which was dated 4-11-1876; she died, three months later.

Zebulon was seen in the 1820 Census Report, living in Cincinnati, in Mill Creek, and his brother John and his family lived next door.

Zebulon Strong built two houses, one was a brick house, at 5434 Hamilton Avenue, and the other one was a frame house, which is now called, "Six Acres Bed & Breakfast," at 5350 Hamilton Avenue. The brick house was surrounded by a large orchard and was used as a safe house, before and during the Civil War. It was part of the Underground Railroad. Six Acres was used to hide runaway slaves. It contains several hiding places for slaves that can still be seen today. The escaping slaves would come up the ravine, from where the old railroad line was later located, and hide in the piles of brush in the gulley, under some old burlap sacks. The Strong children would play in this area, casually leaving behind food. After dark, Zebulon Strong would conceal the slaves in his wagon, which had a false bottom, and would take them out Belmont Avenue to the next station, which was a brick house at the corner of Colerain and Springdale Roads.

His wife was so distrught over his death that she died 3 days later.
