From History of Lawrence County My great great great grandfather Zebulon Gillett, son of John and Comfort Plumb Gillett, was born 3-23-1769, in milford, CT. He married Rachel Griswold d/o Jeremiah and Phoebe Case Griswold. Rachel was born 5-2-1771 in Burlington, CT they had three children, Frances Marion born 12 April 1795 in Burlington, CT; Horatio Nelson born 1799; and Sidney born 28 March 1801 in Seneca Co., NY. Rachel died soon after Sidney's birth. While living in NY, Zebulon married Elizabeth and they had six children, Phoebe, Rachel, Parmelia, Sarah, Lawrence, and Fidelio. In 1817, Zebulon and his family along with his brothers Joel, william, John and a sister Comfort, arrived in Quaker Bottom. John the youngest, went on west and was lost track of. Comfort married Nathaniel Pritchard, Joel was credited with bringing 200 grafted apple trees that he purchased from the Putnam Nursery in Marietta. while preparing them for setting, he found some sprouts, out from the roots, which he cut off to prevent injury to the roots of the good trees. Joel gave the six sprouts to his son Alanson saying" Here I will give you these little Democrats. Set them out" Allansons sprouts grew very rapidly, and by the third year they had apples, one tree proved so choice that Horation Gillett cut some scions from it and grafted them. He named it Rome Beauty or Gillett's seedling. Horatio also represented Lawrence County at the second Ohio Convention for the Revision of the Constitution of the State of Ohio in 1850-1851. On 2-27-1851, Mr. Gillett presented a petition from A. Nichols, and 352 other citizens of Lawrence Co, praying that a clause might be inserted in the new Constitution, prohibiting this Legislature from passing any law legalizing traffic of spiritous liquors, which on motion was laid on the table. Mr. Gillett also presented a petition from Lydia Proctor and 262 other females of Lawrence Co, on the same subject, ehich was laid on the table. goes on to list Zebulons children and spouses.
