Wells, Zachariah - entered service 1776 in Loudoun County, Virginia, in Virginia Regiment & served at Battles of Brandywine & Germantown; taken P.O.W. in 1777, held for 5 months, was exchanged, returned to regiment, & later served at Battle of Bordentown; granted Pension 1825 in Sullivan County, Tennessee, age 80, occupation blacksmith, when wife was deceased, & all of their children were married; soldier unable to work because of infirmity; query letter in file in 1927 from great great granddaughter (on mother's side) Elizabeth C. Crossan, Philadelphia, PA. F-S39119, R2530.

He is commonly identified as being the son of Richard Wells of Baltimore County Maryland. He enlisted in Loudon County Virginia. Loudon County is across the border from modern Montgomery County MD. The later area was part of Baltimore County at the time of the Revolution. So his enlistment location is reasonably consistent with connecting him to the family of Richard Wells of Baltimore County.
