    Services for Yukie Yoshinaka Payne, 87, of Arlington, formerly of Temple will be 10 a.m. Monday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.

    Burial will follow in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

    Mrs. Payne died Wednesday, Feb. 17, at her home.

    She was born on Feb. 22, 1922, to Seiichi and Akiko Tani Yoshinaka in Seattle, Wash. She graduated from Connell High School in 1940 as valedictorian. In 1941, she attended a cultural college in Japan. Because she contracted typhoid fever, she missed the last ship back to the United States before the attack of Pearl Harbor and had to spend the remainder of the war in Japan. At the conclusion of World War II, she worked as an interpreter and translator for the U.S. Army. In 1948, she married Claud M. Payne and was a homemaker. She worked as a secretary for American Desk and then for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1985. She was a volunteer at Scott & White Memorial Hospital and was on the Temple Senior Citizen Bowling Leagues. She was preceded in death by her husband.

    Survivors include a son, Claud W. Payne of Centennial, Colo.; two daughters, Robin Payne of Baytown and Tina Blevins of Arlington; two brothers, Kiyoshi Yoshinaka and Jimmy Yoshinaka; and two grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Odyssey Health Care, 2630 West Freeway, Ste. 102, Fort Worth, Texas 76102.

    Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
