    Part II
At Petersburg in the operations of June 17th, the Fifth was deployed on the skirmish line. The next day, with the rest of the brigade, it was placed in the front line under a heavy artillery fire, by which, however, it lost but one man(14) . The morning report of the regiment, June 30th, gave an aggregate of 587, with only 280 on duty, 303 being on the list of sick and wounded. The regiment moved to the north with the Sixth corps in July; and in the engagement at Fort Stevens, in front of Washington, July 12th, one man of the Fifth, who had been detailed as a sharp shooter, was wounded.
At Charlestown, Va., August 21st, the regiment was again engaged, and lost two men killed and four wounded, one of whom died of his wounds(15) .
    15. J. Lewis, Co. I, and W. Jackman, Co. K. were killed. P. Ladam, Co. A. died of his wounds.
