  5. Winey, age 54, lived on a farm with her husband, J S Johnson, age 65, and son W. H. Their land was worth 2000 and personal property $600. She could not read or write. They lived in the northern district and the post office was in Jonesboro. They lived on 200 acres of land of which 100 acres are improved. Joseph has on the farm, three horses, one milk cows, two working oxen, four sheep, and thirteen swine. His livestock is valued at $400. For the twelve months prior to the census he farmed 200 bushels of indian corn, 2 bales of ginned cotton (400 lbs each), 100 pounds of sweet potatoes, 100 pounds of honey, and 12 pounds of beeswax. The also farmed sweet potaoes, orchard products, irish potatoes, and peas and beans. The population of the county was 4,466 of which 27% were slaves. Clayton county was created from parts of Fayette and Henry's counties in 1858.
