"Winebert George Kemery was born in 1894 in Lafayette, Pennsylvania; he came to this district in 1915 and worked on the Punxatawney Ranch (Now Carman King's Farm). Here he met Lucinda Josephine Watrin who also worked there. She had come in 1909 with her parents from Fairbanks, Iowa where she was born. They homesteaded in the Tongue Creek District. "Bert", as he was known to all, and Lucinda were married in 1917, and lived in High River. They raised eleven children, with a total of 40 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. In 1967 they celebratd their 50th wedding anniversary to which all the famly came home.
Bert ran a dray business, hauling, by team, grain, coal and lumber. His team was often seen on bridge sites, as new roads bridges had to be built. In 1920's he bought his first truck, and it is this "Bert Kemery. the trucker," that will remain in the minds and hearts of most farmers of this and surrounding districts. His first truck soon proved to be too small as his work reached out to the mountains in the west and east to Vulcan. He hired a man and bought a second truck, a General Motors T30; this truck was soon outfitted with a hay trailer which was also used for haulig large bridge timber and lumber. It was in the early '20's that Bert pulled the first semi-trailer out of Robin Hood in Calgary. a forerunner to the large trucks and trailers which are so common on our roads today. He was in the trucking business until 1962.
Lucinda passed away Jan. 24, 1969 and Bert on Jan. 23, 1970.
