William Zimmerman Birth: Oct. 20, 1844, Ohio, USA Death: Jul. 24, 1916 Burial: Fairview Cemetery , Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA Plot: Block 6
Death came to that veteran and well known citizen, Will Zimmerman of Pleasant township, Monday, at St. Joseph, Mo., where he had been taken over a week before for a surgical operation for cancer of the stomach, but which was not performed owing to his weakened condition. The body was shipped back to this place and funeral services held yesterday afternoon in the local Baptist church. An unusually large crowd of long time friends turned out, many of whom had known the deceased for more than forty years. Rev. J. W. Nevman of Phillipsburg preached the funeral sermon and the body was borne to Fairview cemetery in charge of the old soldiers. In the death of Will Zimmerman, this county loses a big-hearted, loyal, manly man. He was one whom everybody naturally liked and respected. Life's troubles, vexations and worries, he bore in a cheerful way, and never voiced pessimism or complaints. When at last he knew that his days were numbered, he faced the inevitable unflinchingly and said he was entirely ready to go. ..William Zimmerman was born in Hocking county, Ohio, October 20, 1844, and died at St. Joe, Mo., July 24, 1916, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 4 days. At the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted as a private in Company D, 4th Regiment of Missouri cavalry and saw over three years of hard, active service. In 1869 after coming home from the war he was married to Mary A. Pyle, and to them were born six children, all of them and the mother are still living. They are Wayne Zimmerman and Mrs. Dan Byers, Emmett, Ida; Lloyd of this city; Mrs. Ovia Ormsbee of Reamsville, and Gill and Ora still at the parental home. In the year of 1874 Mr. Zimmerman and is family came to this county, settling on a homestead in Pleasant township. They lived there intil 1911, and at that time a move was made to Emmett, Ida., the return being made to this place last fall owing to Mr. Zimmerman's failing health. source: Smith County Pioneer, July 27,1916 Parents: Casper Zimmerman (1819 - 1899) Spouse: Mary Ann Pyle Zimmerman (1850 - 1922) Children: Wayne Zimmerman (1870 - 1941).
