Well Rooters, it's like this. I think I MIGHT have found my WILLIAM RUFUS WINTON. The year of birth is right. The state is right, I have all the history on his family, but I have yet to make the connection of he being my GGgrandfather. I am hoping you might help.

Here is the situation:

James Asbury Winton b 3-31-1787 VA d 3-12-1849 TN

He married a:

Rhoda Mitchell b 5-19-1795 TN d 9-3-1886 TN

They had several children. One of the children (apparently one of the youngest) was a WILLIAM RUFUS WINTON who was born 1-9-1834 in Tennessee. I need information on this person. If I can verify that this WILLIAM RUFUS WINTON married my GGgrandmother, ELVIRA LINDLEY, then I have my connection.

I know that my Ggrandfather,(JAMES HARLIN WINTON) SON OF ELVIRA & WILLIAM,was born in 1865, in Texas (or so his death certificate stated). If anyone has access to a death index for TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, TENNESSEE, ARKANSAS, or MISSOURI and look for the following people, I would appreciate it. My main library is closed this weekend and I have to wait a week before I can go, however, if I can receive any clues:

WILLIAM RUFUS WINTON died after 1865 ELVIRA LINDLEY WINTON died after 1865

Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

From: mbarth@@glendale.cc.ca.us Subject: CONNECTION MADE--A HAPPY ENDING TO A LONG SEARCH

Dear Rooters:

I hope this story will raise the hopes of those who are looking. Once again, because of a couple of nice rooters, and this form of communication, I have made the connection for my WINTON family. If any flamers feel this is not the place to write my happy news--as always, flames should be in E-mail.

Several weeks back I asked for information on my WINTON line. I placed my request both here and on the TN roots as I felt they came from that area. A nice gentleman on the TN roots-Herbert-sent me a note with information regarding a book that had a section on WINTON's. That was my first clue, so I posted the name of the book here. A very nice gentleman from Tenn--Charles--volunteered to go to his library as they had the book. He sent me copies of the chapter dealing with WINTON's.

Lo and behold there was a WILLIAM RUFUS WINTON listed as a child of JAMES ASBURY and RHODA MITCHELL WINTON. WRW was the name of my GGgrandfather as listed on my Ggrandfathers death certificate. All that was remaining was making the link. Yesterday, I went to my library (it was closed last weekend..I had to WAIT), and started my search through the Census records. To make a very long story short, I MADE MY CONNECTION!!! I now have proof that the WRW in the book is my GGGgrandther...and JAMES ASBURY WINTON is my GGGGgrandther, and HIS father, John Winton, is my GGGGGgrandfather! (Boy, I hope I got all the G's in there).

I owe this all to Herbert, who took the time to write about the book, but my deepest thanks go to Charles Ward (Charles..I hope I got your last name correct) who took the time to help a fellow rooter. Since there is a WINTON HOUSE and a WINTON CEMETERY in Tenn, this spring break that is where I'll be heading!

This group works. I just wanted to share this story with you to help keep up the spirits!
