William Winchester was a man of great intelligence and had been fairly well educated. In America, he acted as surveyor and in that capacity, laid out the town of Winchester, Maryland on part of his estate, "White Level." White Level consisted of about 1000 acres of well improved land. It was the original hundred of the family, situated in Carroll County, Maryland adjoining the town of Westminster. William owned much other land and was regarded as a man of wealth and greatly respected for his good name and progressive spirit The Winchester homestead was called "White's Level", first granted to John White in 1733, located in Carroll Co, then Frederick Co, MD. It included the site of the present city of Westminster, MD, county seat of Carroll Co. The home has been restored by the county and is now operated as the Winchester Country Inn, a bed & breakfast. William Winchester founded Westminster in 1764. He was a member of Capt Norris' company in the French and Indian War in 1757 and took an active part in the movements which led up to the Revolution. William's will is in Frederick Co, MD, dtd 14 May 1784, pr 7 Oct 1790. William, Lydia, and three of their children are buried in the cemetery at the end of Church St in Westminster. References
