Facts and Events
· At age 43, William enrolled in Capt. M. J. Alexander's Co. (this was Company C, not B; both are listed in the service record)of the Alabama volunteers for a period of 3 years. [Note: Bud Williams also enrolled in the same group per notes from another soldier's written recollections in which he is referred to as "Bud" Williams.] The Certificate of Disability for Discharge indicates William Scott Willliams (listed as W.S. Williams in his record) was born in Newton Co, GA., stood 6' 1" tall, had fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair, and had been a farmer when he enlisted. During May 1862 , he contracted measles which left him with rhematism affecting the spine and hip joints so as to incapacitate him for service. While the company was waiting at Cumberland Gap, TN, he was recommended for discharge on 5 Sep 1862 and discharged effective 10 Sep 1862. A compilation of names of Confederate soldiers from Cherokee Co lists him as William Williams and W.S. Williams, and also indicates his wife Virginia drew a pension in Cherokee Co while living at Centre RFD (rural free delivery -- in the country) and at Key and that she died 4 Dec 1913. I have a copy of his service and pension records and the pension record for wife Virginia. Virginia's pension record shows he died 25 Oct 1898.· Type: Creation Date · Event: 10 SEP 1862 Discharged from CSA due to rheumatism resulting from measles contracted in May 1862. Cumberland Gap, East Tennessee · Note:William S. Williams might have been married three years before his marriage to Cintha Hanson. The Morgan Co GA genweb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamorgan/) lists the marriage of William S. Williams to Elizabeth E. McCalpin, April 24, 1838; however other marriage lists for that county show Elizabeth McAlpin marrying William L. Williams; note the different middle initial. Elizabeth appears to be the daughter of Alexander McCalpin, who is found in the 1840 Morgan Co GA census at page 238-B to 239-A. William Scott Williams would have been just over 17 at the time of that marriage, so it is unlikely that it was he who married Elizabeth McCalpin/McAlpin. The William Williams with wife and young son (<5 yrs) in 1840 Clarke Co GA [where William Scott William's father-in-law Tapley Hanson lived] (at page 233-B) is probably the one with Elizabeth McCalpin/McAlpin. [The 1840 census was not completed until 1 Dec 1841. The date the 1840 census began (and to which information provided was supposed to be based on) was June 1, 1840. Census takers were initially given nine months to complete the census, but this was later extended to 18 months, which would have moved the deadline to Dec 1, 1841.] On the same Clarke Co, GA census page with William Williams is James Hanson, who may be Cintha's uncle (Tapley Hanson's brother.) Cintha appears to have been counted in her parents' home in Clarke County in 1840; see Tapley Henson-Hanson, Jr. data. The Morgan Co GA genweb's list of marriages shows William S. (Scott) Williams married Cintha B. Hanson on 7 Jan 1841 in Morgan Co., GA. [See list of Williams marriages in Morgan County GA further below.] I also obtained a copy of their marriage license from Morgan County. William's marriage date to Cintha's younger sister Virginia A. Hanson, following Cintha's death, is not available since the Cherokee Co. AL courthouse burned twice following their marriage, the last time in 1895. William, Cintha/Syntha, and six of their children are found in the 1850 Murray Co., GA census and in 1860 Cherokee County, Alabama census. William with second wife Virginia is listed in Cherokee County AL censuses from 1870-1880. The 1890 US census is mostly missing except for a few scattered records. William Scott Williams died in 1898.] 1850 Murray Co., GA, census, page 176-A William S. At page 175-B is Joseph T. Williams, 23, GA, with wife Artimissa R.A.S., 25, GA and son Albis M., 1,GA. Living with them may be Joseph's brother Osborn R. Williams, 15, b GA. Also in the household is Seaton Vandiver, 24, GA, son of Baptist preacher Lampkin Vandivere/Vandiver, who lives next door to William S. Williams. It is possible, even likely, that William, Joseph, and Osborn Williams are brothers. [Note: Osborn R. WIlliams served as a private in Co. B, 39th Georgia Inf., CSA, during the Civil War and was paroled at Vicksburg, MS. "At the end of the siege of Vicksburg, surrender terms negotiated between General's Grant and Pemberton allowed for the parole of the Confederate garrison. The Union forces did not have to contend with prisoners of war. Confederate soldiers signed a parole notice promising not to take up arms against the United States until they were exchanged by the proper authorities."] 1860 Cherokee County AL census, Cave Springs GA post office (it served that part of Alabama, too, according to a local historian), page 346-A William S. I have a scanned copy of a tintype photo showing Wilson and his father a few days before Wilson left. According to family history, Wilson went off to war and was never heard from again. Oral family history is that William Scott Williams joined to locate his son Wilson, but was unable to find him during the short time that he served. William Scott Williams' widow Virginia A. Hanson Williams' application for a Confederate soldier's widow pension application from Alabama made on 18 Mar 1902 (obtained from Civil War pension application microfilm file for "Wm. S. Williams" in records of the State Archives, Montgomery, AL). The marriage year and list of children Virginia bore are derived from children's ages, family history, and the 1900 census record for Virginia Williams, then a widow, in which she states she had given birth to 11 children and had been married for 33 years at the time of William's death. Since he died in 1898, the marriage year was evidently in late 1864 or early 1865. Per William's Civil War service record, he was 6 ft 1 inches tall, blue eyed, fair complexion, born in Newton County, GA. Served in 31st Alabama Infantry, Company B, CSA. Joined in March 27, 1862 (at age 43 according to his enlistment papers, which appear to be incorrect) in Talledega. While stationed at Cumberland Gap, William got measles which, according to his Army record, left him with rheumatism in spine and hips. Unable to serve for 60 days, he was given a medical discharge on 20 Sep 1862 and apparently saw little action. His oldest son Wilson T. may have joined the same unit, but apparently was killed in service. Family history provided by Mrs. Willie Owens Gray states Wilson went into the CSA and was never heard from again, prompting William to join the war in order to look for him. If true, this would mean Wilson joined a unit which had formed earlier. I have a copy of a tintype picture of William Scott Williams with Wilson T, taken about 1861. The tintype was loaned to me by Mrs. Velma Williams Cordle, who carried the tintype in her purse to a family reunion and loaned it to me for copying. I also have a copy of picture taken about 1896 of William Scott Williams with his wife Virginia and 5 of his youngest children. The original of the picture was owned by Willie Owens Gray and was sent for publication with the article about William S. Williams "The Heritage of Cherokee County", however the photo was not returned. The photo I have is copied from the article. Article by Willie Owens Gray in "The Heritage of Cherokee County" states William was a devout Christian and member of the Friendship Baptist Church near Spring Garden, Cherokee Co., AL. He and other family members are buried in graves of the Friendship Cemetery marked only with cast concrete block markers. A granite veteran's tombstone was obtained by me and and placed at the head of William Scott Williams' grave in early 2002. His last place of residence, according to family history, was at Frog Mountain, near Spring Garden, AL. "Civil War Veterans and Widows, Cherokee Co., AL" by Catherine C. Mann shows William S. and "Bud" Williams were privates in Co. B of the 31st Alabama Infantry, CSA. It also shows that William's 2nd wife Virginia drew a veteran's widow's pension at Centre RFD and Key (Key Post Office) until her death 4 Dec 1913. In 1860 there were three William S. Williams in the area: (1) Cherokee County page 346 (this one); (2) Talladega County, page 938; (3) Cherokee County page 286, a 3-y old boy living with Peter and Nancy Lauson It is not known if either of the two others is related to William Scott Williams since there were other Williams families in the area. On the page following William Scott Williams entry are Alexander (age 17 b AL) and William (age 14 b AL) Williams in the home of Martha Henderson; Alexander is listed as a day-laborer (initials "DL" entered for job). In the same household is 7 yr old female Assenath Henderson, b AL; she may be a Henson/Hanson, although this is speculation at the present time. In 1870 census William Scott Williams is listed at page 368 (bottom of page and top of next page). In the 1880 Census at page 432 (bottom of page and top of next page) Wm. S. Williams is shown as born in GA and his parents are also born in GA. Same with wife "Permelia", which is a mistake based on another Williams family members-- should be Virginia. There is no obituary from local papers available. Joan Spann Williams of the public library in Centre checked for one. There was a tornado in Spring Garden, Cherokee County on 19 Feb 1884. There may be deaths in the Williams family about that time, but this has not been confirmed. The following information may (or may not) help find William Scott Williams origins. This comes from the Williams-L discussion list. The Williams name has been capitalized to help locate information and I've inserted some bracketed information. 25 Jun 2002 From: "keith d bailey" Are there any people researching the Williams that were in Morgan Co. GA in the 1830-1860 range? I am searching out the parents of Nancy Williams who married Jesse Hollis there in 1848. 27 Jun 2002 From: "keith d bailey" My Jesse Hollis was born in GA ca 1809. He seems to have 1st married Elizabeth Ball in Morgan Co. in 1833. I do not know anything about their family. I have seen that Jesse did get land in the GA land lottery, but I have not yet figured the exact location. In 1837 a George WILLIAMS married a Burrilly Hollis. I have had no idea how they [Jesse and Burilly Hollis] may be related. Then on Jan. 9, 1848 Jesse Hollis married Nancy A. WILLIAMS who was born in GA ca 1834. ...[in 1850 they were in Morgan Co, GA living next to Mary WILLIAMS, 60, VA; in the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, AL; William Scott Williams http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=9e0f7531-2294-499f-83b3-72cd28ba53d6&tid=31266413&pid=613 References
