His mother died in child-birth and he lived with his mother's parents for the first ten years of his life, until his grandfather'a death 17 March 1853. In 1854 he immigrated to Yorkville (now Toronto, Ontario), Upper Canada and was adopted into the family of his mother's sister, Elizabeth Williams Tattle.
